She shows him the credit score and says, "Keep our good credit safe until we really need something?!" or something to that effect - the man then comically jumps into a paddling pool belly first, and then everyone laughs, because it's just so damn funny. Then - "Credit Simple, get your credit score today , its easy, simple and free" comes up on the screen with narration.

I thought, "wow! that ad looks kind of Australian, no new NZ company would have the money to have an advertisement agency come up with this kind of advert". So I did a quick search online and actually found the ads, I was right! its an Australian advert. The Australian one is exactly the same as the NZ one.

- They even have the same lady on it with a different accent an a different husband.

See for yourself:

Australian Credit Simple Advert

NZ Credit Simple Advert

Sorry, it appears as though I have digressed into an advertising review. Regardless of the cheesy advertising, I thought I would try this service and then hopefully give a supporting review so that people (like yourselves) can try it and get a better understand about their credit ratings and scores".

So given that, I eagerly clicked on the site and filled in my Name, Date of Birth and Address (All the things that are needed for a credit check) assuming I would hit submit and get a lovely score like the ad suggested. Then it started asking for my drivers license and phone number, and other information that's not usually required for a credit check. Now this alarmed me somewhat, why would they be asking all of this extra info from me? What was in it for them? To do a credit check they don't actually need my drivers license number unless they wanted to do a license check, and phone number unless they wanted to log it or use it. So just before I hit submit, I thought I would check out the site first to see what they were really about, and why they were advertising offers of a free instant credit check? - Other than just to serve at the pleasure of ones request, for free (yeah right).

In an attempt to put my curiosity at ease of who these people were, I started with the word "Disclaimer" down the bottom of their website, to see what they needed to 'disclaim' in order to get my credit checked for free.

Here is their disclaimer, for those who didn't click on the link above:

"Credit Simple doesn’t provide personalised financial, legal or tax advice. We filter content and offers based on your credit score, but we don’t consider your financial situation (income, expenses, life needs) or personal objectives. We keep Credit Simple free by being paid if your application’s successful, and sometimes to display offers. We aren’t an agent for offer providers. The offer provider (not us) will assess your application and decide whether or not to approve it. If there’s an issue with a good or service, you’ll have to contact the offer provider. We can’t guarantee you will be approved for any advertised offer, and we don’t show you all offers available to you in the NZ market.Your credit score and comparisons against others’ scores will change over time, and those comparisons are made against only part (not all) of the NZ population. For further information, please refer to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy."

What the hell did I just read? this literally has nothing to do with what they claimed to offer on the TV advert. What would one need to be approved for? its a free credit check - how does this even amount to money for them "
We keep Credit Simple free by being paid if your application’s successful"
. What does successful mean? how do you fail at a free check? who pays them? and why is there an apostrophe in "application's" shouldn't it read "application is successful"?

I thought that something weird was going on, so I dug a little deeper, here is what I found -

Simple Credit is affiliated, or has aligned itself with none other than Dun & Bradstreet (D&B).

click here to go to D&B website.

D&B are a third rate credit reporting and debt collection outfit, exactly like Baycorp, but worse. Credit Simple claim to work independently from D&B on the website, but they constantly mention them throughout the terms and conditions, as if D&B are the parent company.

If that is true, and D&B does own Credit Simple, then that makes 'Credit Simple' nothing more than giant data collection machine for D&B, the debt collection company -

Simple Credit's own term of use say that they are not a credit reporting agency, so they rely on giving and receiving info about you from/to Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) the debt collection company.

Whats also concerning, is that in it's terms of use they state "We don't tell anyone about your info". But in their own disclosure statement, in thePrivacy Policy, they state quite clearly that they will collect all your personal info and share it with whom they damn well please, including D&B the debt collection company. I say again, Dunn & Bradstreet is a debt collection agency. So logic says that all the info you submit to Credit Simple to see your credit score (I will get to that later) will go to updating Dun & Bradstreet's debt collection portfolio of debtor information.

I can just see them now approaching credit & finance companies advertising that they have the most up to date information on debtors to collect their debts if it comes to that - because people are just giving it to their subsidiary company 'Credit Simple' willy nilly, to get a score. So watch out if you owe money and want a "free" credit check, you are bound to get a call/letter, or someone turning up at your door to collect from you.

Even if that's not the case and you don't owe money to them, are you happy to willingly providing all your personal information to a company that shares it with a debt collection agency and other companies they please?

but if you are one of those 'nothing to hide & nothing to fear' type folk , you want a free comprehensive credit check done and you don't mind handing over all of your information to debt collection agencies, then go for it, the service looks quite green and circular, But make sure you know exactly what you are signing up for first. The service may be free but it may cost you a ton of money and time at the other end.

But to be fair to Credit Simple, inquiring for credit in general at Noel Leeming or your local car dealer does enable anyone else you have applied to in the past or anyone you owe money to receiving your updated info, but they have to be savvy enough to be searching for it. But then again, if you owe money and aren't paying for it, maybe the pied piper does need paying for peace of mind after all.

Again, check out alternative credit info providing services that aren't debt collection agencies in friendly smiley Australian created ad clothes. If you want a copy of your credit file - go to mycreditfile and they can do one, but it does take time for the free one. The good thing is mycreditfile one isn't at the behest of the grubby little fingers of debt collectors.

We are also in the midst of launching a service that goes through your credit check for you and offers you advice on what to do about clearing any bad credit, or keeping an already good rating for peace of mind. Keep your eyes peeled for the launch of this service. The report itself will be free and we will just charge a small fee for our time to go over it for you and advise you on what to do, we could even call and make arrangements for you based on any defaults. And no we aren't part of any debt collectors to ruin your day, we just want to help.

5 Steps to Fix Your Bad Credit Today

Having Bad Credit can be the worst! Especially if you are trying to buy a car, or you need a loan. I bet the voice in your head says "Just keep applying, someone will approve you". While you may eventuality find that loan company that will hit you with a thousand percent interest & betting on you like Tony Soprano on your left kidney - Every time someone makes an inquiry on you, it lowers your credit score. Thanks to Veda's over complicated-guessing system, the more you look search the less desirable you become. Forget the guaranteed approvals, or the fast approvals, the finance companies will now enter you in the "hmmm, errr, ahhh" category, and you don't even have to have Bad Credit. See how crazy this is? Ladies and Gentlemen, the chickens have indeed come home to roost. But today we are going to Look at the 5 Steps to Fix Your Bad Credit Today:

(I forgot to pay the bill one time)

1. Admit that you have a Bad Credit problem

Folks there is no easy way to say it, you are going to have to sort this one out, you cant afford to avoid it anymore, you cant play the blame game any more - its right there in black and white for the world to see. Stop blaming your sister or cousin for using your name, or the phone bill you forgot to pay, or that you went guarantor for your friend/ mum/ sister. - we have heard it all, and you knew. But all the blaming in the world It doesn't excuse the fact you have Bad Credit. And no amount of blaming will fix that. As Jeff Daniels said in that Facebook viral video - "Admitting you have a problem is the first step in fixing the problem". And you have a problem my friend, a big one.

Bad Credit might not be a problem in your eyes, you get on fine without it being an issue right? It only just pops up for a second when you see a sale on at Harvey Norman. But it actually does more than that, it eats away at your subconscious constantly, causes you more stress, all the things you miss out on, unable to get, or obtain. You don't have options, you have one or two companies that will reluctantly deal with you, but it comes with a million % interest and a million conditions.

If this the way you want to Live, don't read any further, close the page down and continue googling "Bad Credit Loans NZ" for the rest of your life, and good luck to you. But if you have had enough, then confess, admit it to yourself, say it out loud or write it down, "I HAVE BAD CREDIT"! And lets get to work.

2. Get a Copy of your Credit Report

Congratulations on admitting this to yourself, and trying to get it sorted, you have definitely talked the talk - now its time to walk the walk - you are about to do what 99% of the rest of the population with Bad Credit refuse to do, which is to get a copy of your credit report. Its painless to do, its free (but takes time) or we can do one for you immediately, and go through it for you - for a small price ($25) - just click here for that service.

Once you see your credit report, you will know what to do. This is when the stress leaves your body and relief sets in, it doesn't matter how bad it looks, you can always clean it right up. You might be surprised, you might be angry, upset as its worse that you thought, but whatever Bad Credit you have, its time to take action.

3. Prioritise your Defaults

In New Zealand, the Veda (now called Equifax) payment defaults last 6 Years (5 years ,11 Months 31 days, 23 hours & 59 minutes to be exact) and then they fall off the report, whether you have paid them or not. Some companies can be cheeky and re-default you, but this is considered an offence, so not many self respecting companies engage in that kind of human indecency (you get a default, shame on you, they cant collect it off you in 6 years, shame on them).

So given the above, its a waste of time trying to make arrangements for the ones that are about to fall off (within 4 weeks or so). So its best to prioritise your defaults either by date order that they were defaulted or, sorting the lowest default to highest in $ value. Finance Companies want to see you making an effort to get on top of them, some don't mind if you are paying them all off. The order you do this, is a personal one depending on what you are wanting to do with them, which is pay them off.

4. Make arrangements to pay them off

Well here comes the main event, actually arranging to pay them off - Once you have admitted that you have a problem, got a copy of your credit report (again we can do one for you, or you can go to to www.mycreditfile.co.nz), Prioritised your defaults, now we take Action!

For the next part I recommend to prioritise your default by $ value. Sort the defaults from lowest to highest $ amounts.

Next pick up the phone and call each company that defaulted you and offer to pay back $10 per week. They have to accept it. Don't be intimidated by them - be strong, be the boss of the call, they cant hurt you anymore than they already have. In addition to this, you are going to quickly pay off the smallest ones first, within 4 payments - (for some of you this could be 80% of your whole defaults), so you need to budget for this - stay in in the weekends, eat noodles, or cheap meals - you are now investing in your future so make some sacrifices!

From there you "snow-ball" those payments into the next $ value up, and so on and so on, re invest the money you have spent on the previous ones, back into the other ones.

After that first payment, you have to make sure that they change your default to "Paying" in Veda, if they don't, make a complaint with Veda, they have to update your conduct, paying or not.

5. Get an email confirmation from creditors of your arrangement.

After you have made the arrangements, have them email you a copy of what you discussed, so you have a record of it. Secondly this is also good evidence that you have made arrangements to repay the defaults, which helps you get finance. you may have to wait a few days, up to a week but keep onto them about it.

When you next apply for a loan, present these records and you will be surprised how the probably of getting a loan will increase.

Conclusion

You may not think it but getting Bad Credit is terrible for your health, if you aren't paying your bills it will haunt you, which causes you stress, which causes physical changes within your body.
